Celebrated Names
Many years ago, on tour with The Guess Who and later with Bachman-Turner Overdrive, before satellite and cable TV, when TV was transmitted through antennae and aerials, the last show broadcast in most places was The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. When that show was over, there was a high pitch tone and a test pattern on the TV sets for about 5 or 6 hours until the early morning shows started. There was nothing to watch on TV. We'd be awake for hours with nothing to do and found ourselves reading the phone books and picking out cool and unusual names. We'd either write down the names or tear out the phone book pages with the cool names circled in pen. Burton Cummings and I started our own "wierd and cool names club". One of the most fantastic names was found in the Toronto phone book in the late 60's. Xanathon Xajoules. along with Zzzyyyzzzyyyy Zzzyyyzzzyyyzzzyyyzzzyyy (which someone made up just to be listed last in the phone book). But Mr. X. Xajoules was a real person. We phoned him one night. Burton Cummings called and asked for X. X answered the phone. Burton said that we were from the Wierd Names of North America Club and he topped the list. Xanathon (who was a Turkish gentleman) didn't quite understand what we were talking about but was nice and polite to us. BUT, the list started and it continues. I've read many on the Vinyl Tap show every Saturday night and invite you to send in your name or the name with someone with a cool and unusual name. We will celebrate it, just for the fun of it because your name is who you are and what you are all about.
